GREENLING by Levi Pinfold is a beautifully illustrated picture book fable.

Designed for the middle grades, this thought-provoking ecological fantasy features a mysterious green baby who stimulates plant growth and the power of nature wherever he goes. This story of the connection between people and the natural world will promote lots of student discussion.

Librarians will want to add this title to their growing collection of picture books for older youth.

A Wild Thing Is Born

In the gorgeously illustrated GREENLING, on his barren land Mr. Barleycorn finds a strange Greenling baby in a flower pod where an old tree once stood. He isn't quite sure what to do with it, but he knows it's not right to leave the baby alone outside so he brings it home with him. His wife is in a fit, but allows the baby to stay. But the Greenling has a strange power that causes green plants to grow and Mr. and Mrs. Barleycorn's lives change forever because of the little green baby. The story has a rather strong environmental message to it, but I still enjoyed the book. The illustrations are works of art and doing an excellent job of augmenting the story and bringing it to life. I'm surprised someone in Hollywood hasn't snatched up the rights to this book because it would make a great movie (either live action or animated). Overall, I found GREENLING to be a beautifully illustrated children's book with a good message and a decent plot.

I purchased this book for research for a project I had to do and was blown away by the amount of pictures and great photography and material they had in it. Great anectdotes about one of the lost periods of our time, the East India Company.

Amazing book, would recommend to those who wish to know more about this great period in World History.

A Critical, Must-Read for everyone, as everyone "argues" to change another's mind daily. Actually, hermits don't need to read.

I never have been a fan of defense attorneys. I dislike the long-haired, showy trademark look of some defense attorneys. I am not fond of "tree-huggers" who take up my time with their passion for causes that don't directly affect me in my daily trials and tribulations. Then, I read this book, introduced as a "critical, must-read" by a winning lawyer when I attended a Special Needs Education Law seminar put on by Pete Wright. Mr. Spence writes eloquently. He presents his thoughts so colorfully the reader doesn't even realize he or she is learning until thinking about it afterward. I crammed the book over a weekend in preparation for an official meeting Monday morning where I expected I'd have to negotiate and argue. I used a key lesson from Gerry {I can hear him saying don't call me Mr. Spence please} and I didn't have to argue, although I was prepared. I will be re-reading this book, probably several times, because it is so entertaining and instructional. And, I'm going to name that huge old Magnolia tree growing outside of my house. She is beautiful.

Successful Communication a Lawyer’s Perspective

This book is not about how to set up a winning argument providing the best evidence and the best logical case. It is about getting what you want as you communicate with others. People are emotional beings that focus not just on weighing the presented evidence. People have self interests, they are prejudiced, there are emotions and desires, group associations, and then there’s body language, and to get what you want they have to like you, etc. When you argue a case in court, or at home or at work, or to any group of people, you have to consider all of that.

Very briefly; you have to prepare, you have to listen to the other, you have to understand the other, find common ground, and you have to be credible. Therefore you should not avoid emotions and your argument should be personal, and you must always be truthful. Our argument cannot be perceived as a threat or we will never be heard, and assault is not argument. He discusses how to deal with prejudice and hostility and tells us that sometimes losing is winning and sometimes an argument shouldn’t be made at all. He also mentions that telling personal stories is a good way of getting people to see things your way. In addition to advice and guidelines there’s also quite a bit of wisdom and personal opinions, some of which I agree with and some of which I don’t agree with.

One thing I object to is that he sometimes overextends his perspective. For example, there are arguments, or communications, which should avoid emotions and for which the people involved and even their perceived credibility should not matter. I am talking about peer review in natural science and mathematical discourse, which I see as the best path towards “truth”. In that case only the evidence matter and the data and mathematical derivations speak for itself. However, that is outside of his expertise, like so much else that is outside of his expertise. That’s why I titled my review “A Lawyer’s Perspective”.

That does not mean it is not a good book. The book is filled with useful insights and I learned a lot from the book. One of the things I learned from this book is that if I know a lot about a subject and I am arguing with someone who’s very misinformed but stubborn I must resist the temptation to be patronizing, or to crush them. My goal should be to inform them, not to make them hate me. That was just one of many examples of what I’ve learned reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

Authors autobiography not advice

I have been trying to read this book for going on 8 months. I got it referred to me in a list of books and this is by far the hardest book I have ever had getting through it. I have found little to no substance on the psychological points of arguments, what arguments you will come up against, what type of arguers are out there etc. The only bit of advice I have found useful in the 200+ pages was one sentence which said to win an argument dosn't mean getting someone to admit they were wrong but to comply with what you want. That was it the rest of the book is Gerry smelling his own farts and talking about what a great lawyer he is. Seriously he cannot get more than 4 pages without reminiscing about a court case and dosn't even tell us if he won the argument or lost, results of the case, the point to the story. He is an extremely unlikable author the way he presents himself in the book which makes it of course harder to read and I imagine he is an extremely unlikable person in general

About the Author
George Ryga
In 1967, George Ryga soared to national fame with The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, which has since evolved into a modern classic. A self-proclaimed artist in resistance, Ryga takes the role of a fierce and fearless social commentator in most of his plays and his work is renowned for its vivid and thrilling theatricality. George Ryga died of stomach cancer in Summerland, BC, in 1987 and will always be remembered and cherished as one of Canada’s most prolific and powerful writers. His memory was publicly honoured at the BC Book Prizes ceremony in 1993

A play to make you think.

The play may be a rough read for some but it is well worth it. The bare humanity displayed in this play is timeless. It points the finger at the viewer (or in the case reader), who was and is today mostly a middle class clientele. It focuses on the bigger picture, which is the "white man's denial of the Indian humanity." A play most everyone can sympathize with at some point, although I do admit this is best seen and not read.

Ecstasy of Rita Joe Rough Structurally

This play, though filled with poignant messages about the state of Native Canadian societies, is very rough structurally. There are great uses of light, and the setting Ryga proposes is excellent, but the play itself is so rough and deliberate that it is a less-than-pleasant read. It was written in 1967, so though perhaps groundbreaking in its time, this play is not really one to read for enjoyment alone.

Russ Shafer-Landau is Professor of Philosophy and Director of The Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author, editor, or coeditor of several books including The Ethical Life, Third Edition (OUP, 2014), Reason and Responsibility, Fifteenth Edition (2013), and Ethical Theory: An Anthology, Second Edition (2012). He is also the editor of Oxford Studies in Metaethics.

The best philosophy textbook I have been assigned to read.

Russ Shafer-Landau's The Fundamentals of Ethics was just one of the books assigned in a semester's worth of reading for my graduate studies. Philosophy texts are usually a chore to read, and many of them are quite boring. However, there was never an instance where I did not look forward to reading Fundamentals when I had to fulfill the week's reading assignment. I cannot think of any other textbook I have owned that I could say that about!

Shafer-Landau's writing is lucid and engaging, sprinkled with wit and humor and brilliant summaries of complex moral theories. Perhaps some could complain that his treatment of various views is oversimplified, but that would miss the point. The purpose of the text is to introduce the reader to popular theories of normative systems of ethics, and give a short defense of his preferred view of moral objectivity. If one wants to dive deeper, one will find abundant references to primary sources easily found in one of Shafer-Landau's edited volumes (e.g. Ethical Theory: An Anthology).

This book serves the purpose of education well in that it mercifully introduces the reader to thinking about ethics in a way that invites more learning--not just for learning's sake--but for living well.

Very Good, but Could Be a little Better

After reading this Shafer-Landau's 1st edition of the "The Fundamentals of Ethics" in its entirety, I can say it is definitely a very good survey text of ethical theory. That said, it also has a few weaknesses that deserve noting.

Generally speaking, "The Fundamentals of Ethics" has several advantages over some of its competitors. The introductory discussion is quite good, I think; the book splits up the discussion of psychological and ethical egoism into two separate chapters, which makes the topic more manageable; it includes a chapter on desire-satisfaction theory, which most ethics texts ignore; it covers particularism, doing and allowing, and other issues often ignored in survey texts of this kind; and it does a consistently fine job of defining and explaining terms and principles. And as one reviewer (on the OUP site) pointed out, Shafer-Landau's book is better organized than his primary competitor's (James Rachels'"The Elements of Moral Philosophy"), much more comprehensive, and covers some essential meta-ethics. Most of the discussions are easy to follow and most chapters (not all--see below) cover the essentials of each theory. And Landau is an engaging and cogent writer who is a pleasure to read.

But the text also has some minor and major flaws that reviewers have ignored. What I consider the minor problems are these:
1. the book's conversational tone borders, at times, on being a bit annoying
2. the book sometimes divides up its discussion of normative theories into two chapters rather than one--a chapter addressing strengths and a chapter addressing weaknesses--when in most cases those considerations belong together
3. inclusions of examples and applications are uneven at best

Those criticisms are mere quibbles, but I have a few that are substantial:

1. the book does a very poor job of covering the history of ethics, often failing even to mention key figures associated with the development of each theory
2. the chapter on utilitarianism explicitly delimits its analyses to act-utilitarianism (AU), considering what is commonly called rule-utilitarianism (RU) only in a small section of a subsequent chapter on the difficulties of consequentialism, where RU is reduced rule-consequentialism (RC) understood as a rubric of optimific social rules--which effectively poisons the well for robust and nuanced forms of RU (and makes them easy prey for J. Smart's accusations of irrational rule worship) by tacitly disqualifying in advance any rules which might govern non-social moral conduct or might allow a greater sensitivity to situational demands
3. and most surprising of all, the chapter on Kant is very disappointing, failing to discuss many critical aspects of deontological ethics in general, and of Kantian deontology in particular.

Admittedly, it is hard to strike the right balance between too much material and too little in a text aimed at the undergraduate academic market, where it will primarily be used in semester-long classes divided into weekly meetings. But whatever that perfect balance might be, I think this book needs a bit more work before it achieves it. According to the OUP site, however, the new 2nd edition has added discussion questions at the end of each chapter, has expanded the discussion of skepticism, moral rights and the moral community, and has added more real-life examples throughout. And those changes will certainly improve the book's appeal. I only wish the chapter on Kant had been reworked.

But even with its weaknesses, this is still a very good book. And thanks to OUP and Landau, it is one of the most reasonably priced texts of this kind on the market.

Why Moral Objectivism is (almost) certainly true.

This great book starts by demonstrating that neither hedonism nor desire-satisfaction provides a sound foundation to a value theory. It then explores utilitarianism, Kantian categorical imperatives and contractarianism in depth, and highlights their respective deficiency. As none of these competing normative theories is complete, an intuitionist approach based on prima facie duties needs to be considered. The book then points out that all the aforementioned theories fail to address the issue of moral character, and virtue ethics may therefore complement them. Finally, the author makes a good case that relativism and nihilism are almost certainly false. Five stars.
