great introductory book covering all the key topics
By Michael R. Chernick
In contrast to the first reviewer I loved this book! It should be pointed that I am reviewing this first official edition in hard cover with a CD-ROM while the first reviewer reviewed a preliminary edition in paperback with no CD and published in 2005 whereas this text has a 2006 copyright date.
The authors are all statistics professors at Boston University with Ralph D'Agostino Sr. the most well-known. They have a great deal of experience as teachers researchers and consultants and it shows in the material and the clarity of presentation. Also to their credit, they provide numerous worked out examples in the text and plenty of exericises at the end of the chapters that can be given as homework problems. The other reviewer complained about not having any answers given in the back of the book. I question how valuable that would be. The in-text exercises and the clear exposition in the text , along with an instructor, should be enough for the students to gain enough confidence to try the homework problems with some confidence that they are doing them right! Also the instructor should have a solutions manual to work from or should put one together to go over the homework in class and/or in tutorial sections. Sometime students can waste a lot of time trying to force their solution to match the answer in the back of the book. What if there is a error or typo in the book's answer?

I like the way the authors present the material and the fact that they illustrate the methodology with real examples and SAS software. Many of the analyses are done using the Framingham Heart Study data which is a well designed cohort study with thus far a long 50 year follow-up on the surviving original cohorts. We benefit from the authors' intimate knowledge of this data snd their ability to illustrate a variety of biostatistical methods using it. There is also an interesting follow-up study that was conducted with the offspring of the original Framington cohorts that is discussed in the book.

The book starts with a motivating chapter. I did a similar thing in my introductory book for health science majors. Students in the health sciences are not very interested in math and may have a preconceived notion that statistics is boring mathematics and not relevant to their work. These ideas are very much off base and a good introductory chapter can dispell these notions. The next three chapters are standard to almost any first statistics course starting with ways to summarize data for description. This includes a section on statistical computing snd an introduction to the Framingham study and its data.

Next an introductory chapter on probability is given that includes the basics and some important combinatorial ideas needed to understand the binomial distribution. Then the binomial and normal distributions are presented. This chapter and all subsequent chapters have a section on statistical computing using SAS. Appendix A provides the basic components of SAS that are needed to run analyses in SAS along with sample code and sample output.

Next Chapter 4, as part of a logical progression, covers sampling distributions and the central limit theorem. Chapter 5 covers inference for a single sample mean and includes discussion of power and precision in the important practical problem of deciding how many subjects are needed to draw proper inferences from the trial. This deserves mention because many elementary statistics books avoid this topic and yet it is always one of the first questions a statistician is faced with when he is designing a clinical trial.

Chapter 6 does essentially the same thing as 5 but for two sample problems where the difference of two means is often the key parameter. In the two sample problem there is the added complication of whether or not the two population variances are equal and/or the two sample sizes are equal. Methods are available for all of these situations. Also matched pair designs involve two correlated populations of equal size and can often improve precision over designs that use independent populations to compute the mean difference. Such analyses often come up in clinical trials when baseline and final values are compared for the same subject and for pre-intervention and post-intervention tests in educational trianing studies. Again power and precision the SAS procedures and the analysis of the Framingham Heart Study are given.

The remaining chapters are Categorical Data (Chapter 7) Comparing risks in two populations (Chapter 8), Analysis of Variance (Chapter 9), Correlation and Regression (Chapter 10), Logistic Regression (Chapter 11), Nonparametric Tests (Chapter 12), and Introduction to Survival Analysis (Chapter 13). These are important chapters commonly included in introductory biostatistics texts but chapters such as 8, 10 and 12 are often not included in a general introductory statistics course.

In addition to Appendix A on SAS, Appendix B provides the traditional statistical tables but also shows why the are no longer really necessary since all these table entries can be generated using software. In this case the authors demonstrate it with SAS. And finally, Appendix C provides additional information and data documentation on the Framingham Heart Study.

This text would make a great course text for medical students and health science majors and could even be used as a first biostatistics course for either masters or PhD level statistics students who are interested in biostatistics. It also makes a good reference book for statisticians and biostatisticians.

Introductory Applied Biostatistics
By Tony
This is a great textbook for an introduction to biostatistics. My "required" textbook for my Introduction to Biostatistical Methods was way to technical for me to understand. I got this book to translate and really learn the basics (I have little mathmatics background). Its geared to those who may not have had any statistics backgrounds and easy to read.

Powerful work on finding your life's purpose and developing a path to mastery
By Mike Mertens
This is an extremely powerful work on how to achieve mastery in one's life. Mastery can be thought of as the unique way each of us can fully actualize our potential for greatness and enjoy a fulfilling life.

Achieving Mastery in life is a lot of work but it is the way to a flourishing life (a life of self-fulfillment). Spinoza's quote "All things excellent are as difficult as they are rare" came to mind several times as I read the book. The author provides ideas and strategies that can improve the process for those willing to expend the effort. I plan to re-read and work with the ideas and strategies covered in this book and apply them to my personal context. I also plan to purchase copies of the book for my wife and 2 teenage sons so they can benefit from this material as well.

The work begins by discussing how to discover one's purpose in life. This is unique to each individual and needs to be well thought through. The author gives 5 strategies for finding your life's task and illustrates these strategies with historical and contemporary figures. Two of the strategies he discusses that really gave me a lot to think about are:
1. ) Occupy the perfect niche - the Darwinian strategy. In this strategy you need to find the career niche that best fits your interests and talents and then evolve that niche over time. I found the eaxample of V.S. Ramachandran very interesting
2.) Let go of the past - the adaptation strategy. The following quote from this section that really resonated with me:
"You must adapt your Life's Task to these circumstances. You do not hold on to past ways of doing things, because it will ensure you will fall behind and suffer for it. You are flexible and looking to adapt."

The author then covers the Apprentice Phase which he breaks into 3 steps:
1.) Deep Observation - the Passive Mode
2.) Skills Acquisition - the Practice Mode
3.) Experimentation - The Active Mode

There are detailed strategies for completing the ideal appenticeship. These are illustrated by examples. 2 of my favorites in this section were "move toward resistance and pain" as illustrated by the example of Bill Bradley and "apprentice yourself in failure" as illustrated by Henry Ford. All 8 strategies are worth thinking about in detail.

The next section covers learning through a Mentor and is one of the best parts of the book. The example of Michael Faraday is used as a great illustration. There are strategies discussed for finding the appropriate mentor(s), knowing when to break away from the mentor and what to do if you cannot find a mentor (the example here is Thomas Edison and there is an interesting tie-back to Faraday). Having a mentor is the most effective way to gain deep knowledge of a field in the least amount of time - it greatly accelerates that path to Mastery.

The next section deals with social intelligence and seeing people as they are. Benjamin Franklin is used as an example. There are 7 deadly realities covered in this section (envy, conformism, rigidity, self-obsessiveness, laziness, flightiness and passive aggression) as well as strategies for acquiring social intelligence.

The fifth section is on awakening the dimensional mind. This is where you see more and more aspects of reality and develop ways to become more creative (and not get stuck in the past). There are several strategies on creativity discussed in detail. I found the discussion on ways to alter one's perspective especially illuminating. These include avoiding:
* Looking at the "what" instead of the "how"
* Rushing to generalities and ignoring details
* Confirming paradigms and ignoring anomalies - (key quote: "...anomalies themselves contain the richest information. They often reveal to us the flaws in our paradigms and open up new ways of looking at the world")
* fixating on what is present, ignoring what is absent (Sherlock Holmes example)

The section continues with strategies and examples for this "creative-active" phase. My favorite was a section on Mechanical Intelligence with the Wright Brothers as an example.

The Final Section is on Mastery as the fusing of the Intuitive with the Rational. The strategies in this section are very powerful and I will be returning to them again and again. Here are the 7 strategies:
1.) Connect to your environment
2.) Play to your strengths (this is very important - see further thoughts on this below)
3.) Transform yourself through practice
4.) Internalize the details - the life force (Leonardo Da Vinci example)
5.) Widen your vision
6.) Submit to the other - the Inside Out perspective
7.) Synthesize all forms of knowledge

This is a very powerful book filled with a lot of good ideas and strategies. There are ideas I plan to continue to "chew" on and think more deeply about while I work to integrate these ideas and strategies into my personal context.

A lot of the book stresses the importance of self-discipline, persevering through difficult challenges, the importance of an adaptive and active mind, independent thinking and integrating all of one's knowledge. Here are a few recommendations I would make to augment the material covered in this book:
1.) For Self-Displine and Willpower (and perseverance):
Willpower by Tierney and Baumeister
The Power of Habit by Duhigg
Grit (see TED Talk by Angela Duckworth and the GRIT assessment as well - Grit Assessment can be found at: available at [...])
2.) For an adaptive/active mindset (and recovering from failure)
Mindset by Carol Dweck
Apapt by Tim Harford
3.) For a great fictional example of many of the ideas covered in the book, I would recommend Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead (Roark as a positive example; Keating as a negative example of what the author calls "the false self")
4.) Other Real world examples
Richard Feynman (see his books "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" and "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out"
5.) Finding your strengths
Strengthsfinder 2.0 by Tom Rath
VIA Survey of Character Strengths (available at [...])

Part Instruction/Part Inspiration - NOTHING like OUTLIERS
By Quirky Girl
I read Gladwell's "Outliers" and when I saw Mastery, I thought, didn't Gladwell already DO this book?
Kind of, but not really.
This book is totally different.
Gladwell's book is filled with examples.
Greene's book is an instructional inspiration, so to speak. Outliers didn't present a roadmap, which is what really differentiates the books.
It starts with examining your past and how to discover what you are meant to do -then steers you on a path towards following those who are where you want to be, how to work with them and make the most of the relationship - and one of my favorite parts is seeing people as they are (social intelligence).
It then delves into creativity and how to blend it with reality - how to become a master of your chosen destiny.
If you love quotes, this book is packed with them. It's also packed with examples of true stories.
Outliers leaves readers with the answer of how successful people got to the top -
Mastery leaves readers with a road map of how to become one of those successful people (accompanied by stories of achievement).
Compelling and commanding - this is a book that should come with a highlighter and will have a permanent place on your inspirational bookshelf.

Fans of Greene's work will be pleased
By kelsie
"Mastery" continues in the tradition of Greene's other work, especially The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, and The 33 Strategies of War (Joost Elffers Books). Consider this book, if you will, as a synthesis and application of the principles in those three books: in the "48 Laws," Greene introduced a set of concepts loosely based on Gracian's "The Art of Worldly Wisdom" that assisted readers in determining how to gain and maintain control. In "Seduction," Greene taught readers the principles of gaining and maintaining status as a desire of others; and in the "33 Strategies," Greene shifted the ground beneath our feet from the boardroom and living room to the battlefield, describing how militaristic techniques and approaches could be used to achieve our goals and outcomes.

"Mastery" synthesizes much of this previous work into a larger framework, a longer-term project--a "bigger picture," so to speak. Greene defines "mastery" as the ultimate power: "[A] form of power and intelligence that represents the high point of human potential. It is the source of the greatest achievements and discoveries in history. It is an intelligence that is not taught in our schools nor analyzed by professors, but almost all of us,a t some point, have had glimpses of it in our own experience."

As with his previous works, Greene relies heavily on historical anecdotes to explain his six-step plan to the achievement of mastery:
1. Discover your calling: the life's task
2. Submit to reality: the ideal apprenticeship
3. Absorb the master's power: the mentor dynamic
4. See people as they are: social intelligence
5. Awaken the dimensional mind: the creative-active
6. Fuse the intuitive with the rational: mastery

For each of these steps, Greene includes a detailed explanation of what the step's goal is, relevant historical examples of the step in action, and the strategies for achieving the goal and moving to the next step. For example, in the first step (the life's task), Greene somewhat metaphysically argues that "You possess an inner force that seeks to guide you toward your Life's Task--what you are meant to accomplish in the time that you have to live." Determining what this task is is the goal of the first step. Greene then offers up Leonardo Da Vinci as an example of this search, and provides five strategies for "finding your life's task": returning to your origins, occupying the perfect niche, avoiding the false path, letting go of the past, and finding your way back. Each of these strategies is further accompanied by more historical anecdotes.

Whereas the "48 Laws," "33 Strategies," and "Seduction" had focused on somewhat tighter, more confined situations--and were presented in a rather fragmented, isolated manner that did not necessarily relate each rule or precept to the others--"Mastery" is a conscious attempt to bring together all this information and these principles into a single, directed course of action. This book, more than all the others, is Robert Greene's answer to the question of how to "win friends and influence people" (with emphasis on the latter).

A worthy addition to any library--especially those with well-thumbed copies of Greene's earlier books.

Law is Gospel
By Daniel Beck
"Law is Gospel" wrote Charles Spurgeon of this writer. And after reading this book, you can understand why. Law looks at many of the stories we learned from Genesis in Sunday school class, and shows that they are much more significant than many of our SS teachers understood. Far from being morality lessons, they show the gospel was being unveiled from the first chapters of the first book. Law is inspiring in his devotional style, invigorating in his doctrinal discipline, and pastoral in his applications to the reader.

Outstanding source of ideas for teachers and preachers
By David A. Bielby
Although this little gem of a book is about 150 years old, it is one of the very few books I've found that focuses on how Genesis points to Jesus Christ. The thing that I love about this approach is that it mirrors quite often the thoughts of the apostles in New Testament as they contemplate what God was pointing to in the OT. So for Genesis he has about 50 items. Some of them are not mentioned clearly in the NT. Some of them are harder to see. Often he doesn't build a strong case for the point, but instead moves into a devotional style teaching that builds on his initial claim.

Other points in his book of fifty cases where the gospel is sown into Genesis are more powerful. I found about 10 of his points that are worth preaching and have developed a blog on those points. So this little book is the source for my original blog on Genesis!! I believe he is most convincing when Henry Law's perspective matches the perspective of the NT authors.

Let me illustrate the style with on of his very interesting points. He teaches on Melchizedek from Genesis 14. Here is a snippet of his teaching for you to see:

"The first war, which darkens history's page, is ended. Abraham is moving homewards--crowned with success--laden with spoil. Suddenly a scene breaks on us--marvelous in what it reveals--marvelous in what it conceals. A personage, who is all wonder, stands on the stage of Scripture. His name bids us mark him well. It is a full Gospel-note. He is high in earthly dignity, for he is Salem's king. He is high in holy function, for he is the priest of the most high God. Do we ask his lineage? It is shrouded in a veil, which we may not pierce. Do we seek the morning of his days? His sun never rises. Do we seek the evening of his life? His sun never sets. He only appears in full-blown stature, and in meridian blaze. So obscure is he in sublimity, so sublime in obscurity, that it is no surprise to hear the question, Can this be merely man? He comes forward with neither empty hand nor silent lip. He strengthens the patriarch with refreshment for the way. He adds, too, the greater strength of blessing in the name of God. Abraham owns the claim to reverence and to homage. He presents a tenth part of all.

Such is the record. But Scripture pauses not here. It teaches us, that all these lines of mystery are lineaments of Jesus. It shows, in this stately person, no doubtful glimpse of the glories of the office of the Lord. It tells us in distinct phrase, he is "made like unto the Son of God." The tidings are often repeated, that Jesus is "a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." Hence faith, which only lives looking unto Jesus, sits at His feet in holy, happy musings, and finds the cheering of full Gospel-rays. (End H. Law quote)

So you can see what I'm saying. This style is convincing in this passage in part because Hebrews draws a link between Melchizedek and Jesus. In some of his chapters that link is not made as clearly. This is the reason why I did not give this book a five star. However, it is actually one of my favorite books because it's focus matches quite closely to my own focus for preaching.

From the Publisher
I can't imagine a better gift for a young graduate...

It's not about manners; it's about manhood...

I want my sons -- all of them -- to read this book...

Miner may be writing about ancient ideas, but I felt he was writing about the man I have always tried to be...

Are any of these guys on eHarmony?

In words like these, countless readers have expressed their own reactions to Brad Miner's The Compleat Gentleman.

Neither prude nor prig nor fop, the gentleman is the true knight and the true lover, a classic combination of strength and selflessness, contemplation, correct action and, yes...cool.

He is the aristocrat not of wealth or birth, but of virtue.

Other men, as well as women, instinctively admire him. But they may not realize why they are drawn to him, for he never calls attention to his own virtues or strengths.

He will take a stand to defend the true and the good and the beautiful. But he knows that taking a stand is very different from making a show. Making a show is not cool.

Miner is too wise in the ways of young men to think they will respond to a lecture or another guidebook on which fork to use or how to keep your bowtie from spinning. (Of course, the gentleman's bowtie does not spin -- cool presumes competent!)

Instead he tells us a story, a story of an ideal and the men throughout history who have tried -- always imperfectly -- to live up to it.

Miner traces the concept of manliness from the jousting fields of the twelfth century to the decks of Titanic. The three masculine archetypes that emerge -- the warrior, the lover and the monk or scholar -- combine in the character of the "compleat gentleman": the warrior for truth and beauty; the lover whose passion exemplifies his respect for women; the man of disciplined mind who knows he must be able to discern truth if he is to defend it.

And finally, Miner shows us that the true gentleman always practices these virtues with the discretion, decorum and nonchalance that the Renaissance called sprezzatura and we call cool.

Essential guide for the would-be gentleman
By Grover Partee
I have recommended this book to all sorts of men (and women) as a guide for those who wish to be (or wish to live with) a gentleman. It would be a terrific life-long gift for a young man about to begin making his way in the world. Brad Miner has written what deserves to be a new classic. This is not a book for the "macho man." Although it does recommend that a man should know how to fight (and be willing to do so) when necessary, it is also very clear that a gentleman is one who recognizes when it is not necessary. It is not a book for the "metrosexual" either; it will not tell you how to dress because, contrary to popular wisdom, clothes do not make the man. Someone who wishes to be a "dandy" can learn to look the part, but this is a book about living the part. A knight (the author's model gentleman) is a collection of specific virtues, not a suit of armor and a sword. I expect to re-read this book several times over the next few years because I am sure there are things I missed the first time through. Like many classics, reading it is like peeling an onion. Each reading will, I expect, reveal new layers of meaning and bring new insights. My very great thanks to Mr. Miner, for a marvelous bit of work!

Central Illinois Catholic

I purchased the book as a gift for my husband. He loved the book as it upholds many of the traditional principles he strives to live by. If your idea of a gentleman is the pacifist wimp who hides his cowardice behind a facade of tolerance this book is definitely not for you. This is a book for real men, upright, chivalrous, and strong. It is an excellent piece of work and is an ideal gift for young men who aspire to be the best they can be.

Epidemic Invasions: Yellow Fever and the Limits of Cuban Independence, 1878-1930, by Mariola Espinosa

In the early fall of 1897, yellow fever shuttered businesses, paralyzed trade, and caused tens of thousand of people living in the southern United States to abandon their homes and flee for their lives. Originating in Cuba, the deadly plague inspired disease-control measures that not only protected U.S. trade interests but also justified the political and economic domination of the island nation from which the pestilence came. By focusing on yellow fever, Epidemic Invasions uncovers for the first time how the devastating power of this virus profoundly shaped the relationship between the two countries.

Yellow fever in Cuba, Mariola Espinosa demonstrates, motivated the United States to declare war against Spain in 1898, and, after the war was won and the disease eradicated, the United States demanded that Cuba pledge in its new constitution to maintain the sanitation standards established during the occupation. By situating the history of the fight against yellow fever within its political, military, and economic context, Espinosa reveals that the U.S. program of sanitation and disease control in Cuba was not a charitable endeavor. Instead, she shows that it was an exercise in colonial public health that served to eliminate threats to the continued expansion of U.S. influence in the world.
