Simón Vélez: Architect Mastering Bamboo, by Pierre Frey

For Colombian architect Simon Vélez (born 1949), botany has been inextricable from architecture. His work has been significantly determined by his country’s tropical resources, in particular its lush vegetation and abundance of guadua bamboo--a common species throughout the valleys of Colombia. Working in close collaboration with the engineer–constructor Marcello Villegas, Vélez has devised bamboo buildings that are extraordinary not only in appearance but also in their structural simplicity, and in their suitability for scenarios in which construction tools and resources are minimal. Vélez has so successfully popularized guadua bamboo that today even his wealthiest clients are commissioning luxury residences in this material formerly associated with peasant dwellings. He has also successfully persuaded numerous public administrations, town councils and businesses concerned about the environmental impact of their activities to adopt and promote guadua bamboo; he has designed bamboo buildings in Germany, France, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, China, Jamaica, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador and India. In this monograph, illustrated throughout by Deidi von Schaewen’s photographs, author Pierre Frey guides us through a range of works by Vélez, examining his construction methods--in bamboo, steel and wood--as exemplifying a new kind of vernacular architecture.

Beautiful and Thoughtful Book
By casita123
This is a thoughtful and beautiful book about the work of Simon Velez, a Colombian architect whose work shows elegance and simplicity in design. While it is not a technical book about bamboo construction, it is an inspiring display of Simon Velez's work with wonderfully written text by Pierre Frey who describes Simon Velez and his architecture poignantly. While Simon Velez does not have an official monograph to date, I would say this is the closet thing to it! It is really a beautiful book with a beautiful layout. The photographs, and architecture, are truly stunning!

Spike Lee: That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It, by Spike Lee

A candid account of one of America's most provocative filmmakers that belongs on the shelf of any serious movie lover.

Spike Lee tells the cinematic story of the preeminent director, whose pioneering films―from Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever, and Malcolm X to 25th Hour , Bamboozled, and The Inside Man―helped transform the face of late twentieth-century America. With unprecedented access to the Lee family and new interviews with stars and celebrities―including Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Rosie Perez, Adrien Brody, John Turturro, and many others―film critic Kaleem Aftab chronicles Spike Lee's explosive rise to stardom, exploring such important issues as Black Nationalism, Hollywood stereotyping, and the rise of a powerful black middle class. Lee's prominence in American culture continues in 2006 with the release of The Inside Man and a forthcoming documentary on Hurricane Katrina. Spike Lee tells us as much about the last two decades of American social history as it does about the life of this fascinating director.

From Publishers Weekly
The work of one of America's more important filmmakers is ill-served by this reverential biography. Aftab arranges the narrative around Lee's films, from breakout hit She's Gotta Have It (1986), through such cinematic touchstones as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), ending with the flop She Hate Me (2004). The resulting string-of-boxcars structure is a little disjointed, but it keeps the focus on Lee's often controversial and politically engaged films and delivers a flow of moviemaking anecdotes that give a sense of the director's domineering, manipulative, charismatic personality. Unfortunately, this very authorized biography staggers under the weight of the many lengthy tributes to Lee's genius and his statesmanship as the standard-bearer of African-American cinema. Complaints are sometimes aired about the director and his movies (he does cop to allowing "unreconstructed male chauvinism" to mar his films), but criticisms are quickly shouted down by rebuttals from Lee and a chorus of admiring actors and colleagues. Aftab's poorly organized text often feels like a collection of barely edited interview transcripts, with Lee and his friends' rambling on for paragraphs on end. The outcome is a sluggish, defensive biography of a man who deserves a more incisive treatment. Photos. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Over the course of his career, film director Spike Lee has alienated many groups: Italian Americans, Asian Americans, Jews, lesbians--and, most recently, paying moviegoers. Because of this book's packaging (first-person subtitle, head-on author photo, "as told to" writing credit), fans and foes alike may think they're getting a candid, jointly authored memoir written in Lee's voice. But Spike Lee is actually an oral history in which the director's voice is but one of many. Aftab interviewed scores of family, friends, and filmmaking collaborators, then created a reportorial narrative, organized by film. (The method will be familiar to anyone who's read the companion books to Lee's earlier films.) But if readers are disappointed at not getting more from Lee himself, there's consolation in that what his colleagues and critics say can be more revealing. And although the book has Lee's imprimatur, Aftab is not afraid to take issue with Lee. As might be expected with such a controversial subject, too much time is spent getting sides of arguments, and the writing is somewhat stiff, but this is still an invigorating look back at the work of one of our least predictable, most important filmmakers. As for really getting to know Lee, we'll have to wait until he writes his own story. Keir Graff

(RAW Rating: 2.5) - Exposing Spike
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
From his childhood and all throughout his film career, Spike Lee, born Shelton Jackson Lee, has been outspoken and opinionated. These solid traits, along with the sense of responsibility one acquires by being the oldest of five siblings, combined with education, talent, hard work, and great timing to produce one of the most recognized African-American film directors and producers to date. In SPIKE LEE: THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT, author Kaleem Aftab pens Spike's biography with such dedication and attention to details that readers will know everything one can know being on the outside looking into the life of Spike Lee: his upbringing, his college days, his first movies, his motivations, his financial trials, his political standpoints, his outlook on life, his recent films, and his goals. Although all is not rosy, Aftab still pulls back the cover and exposes details of Spike's life, before, after, and during the making of his films.

Starting with his childhood and then arranged by film, Aftab proves to have done excellent research as he provides readers with a plethora of facts about everyone Spike ever spoke to and/or dealt with and about how he started and got to where he is now. Offering insight into the motivations behind Spike's movies and good behind-the-scenes information, Aftab presents a novel that delves not just into Spike's life, but also illuminates certain well-known actors who Spike chose to work with: Bill Nunn, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro, Danny Aiello, and Laurence Fishburne (to name a few). Readers really get a strong grasp of who Spike Lee is as Aftab talks about some of the filmmaker's classic New York outlooks and his perspectives on African-Americans, not just in film but also in life.

Extremely informational, SPIKE LEE, by Aftab, starts out slow and mundane. Aftab's writing style is not very intriguing or captivating for readers, which is a shame for it to be the biography of such an interesting figure. Also jumpy, it is difficult to keep up with what is going on. A section will begin discussing one event and will go off on a tangent about a list of people, who they are, and how they relate to Spike or the movie, and then jump back to the previous event. Transitional aids would help to make section themes flow better. A stronger narrative voice would also make information flow better. Throughout the biography, there are a plethora of quotes. Sometimes, a quote is so long and involved that it is easy for readers to forget that it is a quote, and jumping back to the narrator's voice once again throws off the flow of the text. As readers press on and become adjusted to Aftab's writing style, his composition creates a well-researched look into the life of one of America's prominent African-American directors/producers: Spike Lee.

He Wuz Robbed!!!
By Joel McIver/author
I disagree with the reviews left so far. I found this book to be very interesting and informative. I was expecting a first person retelling of Spike's life from his point of view. What I received was an honest account of Lee's movie making history, told from the perspective of the people who were there. That to me is what makes this book special.

Most would agree that Spike Lee played an instrumental role in changing the movie industry. He was one of the first AA directors to make films "his way", he also opened doors for a multitude of African American actors, directors, DPs, sound people etc. This book gives the low down on how he accomplished all of that. What I liked even more about this work is the fact that it doesn't glorify Lee. It seems to be a vehicle for Lee to tell us how he goes about his craft but also allows the people closest to him to express their views on what he has done well and not so well over the course of his career.

While I admit to being a fan of this director's prolific work and contributions, I am not such a fan as to believe he doesn't have some personality issues that rub folks the wrong way. Beyond that, he has been a trailblazer and a champion for minorities in an industry that had long ago written them off. I also think that if he wanted to, Mr. Lee is very capable of making outstanding commercial movies, that's just not his thing. Many of us are unaware that he has been a driving force behind some of Black Americas best commercial movies, The Best Man and Love and Basketball for example.

For better or worse (depending on the reader)this book reads less like a biography and more like the transcript of a documentary. I recommend it to serious movie buffs, and people with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Plagued with mistakes, but it's an honest effort
By Ran Walker
After reading this book and thinking about it as a whole, I was led to give it a 3-star rating, but it could've been a 5-star rating, if the editing were much stronger.

Viewing the reviews listed here, I see various complaints about the book, but none of them address what I consider to be the most glaringly obvious things: the grammatical errors and the cultural fact errors--two things that could have been handled before the book even went to the printer. First, and I must admit that I don't know if England uses a different set of grammatical rules, there is a serious problem with subject verb agreement throughout the entire text, particularly with regard to collective nouns and singular nouns with a plural appearance. Aftab even changes around some of the quotes to fit this very jarring grammatical detour. (For example, "40 Acres and a Mule are...." While I teach composition, I still know the average reader could pick up on this, whether it's setting a word like "jury" or committee" against the plural verb form or something more complicated like the 40 Acres name.)

Next, there are numerous fact errors. Among them is a misquote of Louis Farrakhan ("good" should be "great"--and that quote is forever taken out of context, and I say that not to defend the man at all). He also has Tupac dying in 1995 after being shot five times, Carmello Anthony going straight to the pros from high school, alongside LeBron James (as opposed to leading Syracuse to a NCAA championship), and stating that Cash Money Records was Master P's record label (not No Limit).

These errors are very glaring, but I can best compare them to enjoying a class where a teacher insists on using screechy chalk on the blackboard, because overall I really liked the book. It took enormous effort to synthesize so much information into a highly readable biography. Don't get me wrong. It is far from perfect, but the linear layout and the quotes from various actors and Spike create a kind of balance so that it's not completely one-sided. And Aftab covers all of the media worthy hot topics that surrounded each of Lee's films so that when you finish the book, you will have gotten a strong glimpse into Lee's professional approach to filmmaking.

I'm pretty sure that Spike Lee's own journals from his films will ultimately prove to be more useful for a beginning filmmaker than this book. It does, however, have its merits.

Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, by James Gavin

This first major biography of the most romanticized icon in jazz thrillingly recounts his wild ride. From his emergence in the 1950s--when an uncannily beautiful young man from Oklahoma appeared on the West Coast to become, seemingly overnight, the prince of "cool" jazz--until his violent, drug-related death in Amsterdam in 1988, Chet Baker lived a life that has become an American myth. Here, drawing on hundreds of interviews and previously untapped sources, James Gavin gives a hair-raising account of the trumpeter's dark journey.

From Publishers Weekly
The 1988 funeral of famed trumpet player and vocalist Chet Baker in L.A. was emblematic of the disorder and dysfunction of his life though he was world famous, only a small clique of loyal fans and family attended, and they were fighting with one another. Even his death in Amsterdam (possibly an overdose or drug-related murder) was an unsettled, sordid enigma. Gavin's elegantly written and thoroughly researched biography traces the astonishing highs and lows of Baker's personal and professional life. Born in 1929 in Oklahoma to a doting mother and alcoholic father, he spent 18 months in the army at age 17 before his prodigious talent blossomed when he went back to high school. Aggressively pursuing his career, he became famous for both his trumpet playing and his equally impressive hard drug habit, both of which increased over the next two decades. Gavin is superb at placing Baker in a clearly defined cultural context the "defiant new youth culture: Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, and James Dean, all of whom symbolized disgust with every false hope infecting America" and in explicating Baker's out-of-control actions. Gavin has an unerring eye for the salient detail as he charts the continual down-spiraling of the trumpeter's life. Drawing upon a wealth of personal interviews, music journal reviews, national media, jazz criticism and a sound sociological sense of the period, Gavin has produced a stark, troubling portrait of both the artist and his times.

From Library Journal
There's a point at which the reporting of salacious or sadistic behavior overwhelms more important aspects of a person's life. Gavin (Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret) comes perilously close to crossing that line in this biography of jazz trumpeter Baker, whose drug-addled life is well known to music fans. Often, Gavin examines the minutest details of Baker's heroin abuse at the expense of detailing his musical triumphs. While he provides valuable information on Baker's neglect and bad treatment of family and friends, as well as his European and Japanese tours, he fails to demonstrate an understanding of his subject's music, which demands respect. Art Pepper's Straight Life is still one of the best examples of jazz biography/autobiography; it not only conveys the toll that heroin took on Pepper (one of Baker's contemporaries) but also gives a good feel for the music. Readers looking for a less commercial (though slightly more fawning) biography are directed to Jeroen de Valk's Chet Baker. Recommended with reservations for academic and public libraries. [This month, Blue Note Records will release Deep in a Dream: The Ultimate Chet Baker Collection, produced by Gavin. Ed.] William G. Kenz, Minnesota State Univ., Moorhea.

From Booklist
Jazz trumpet player and singer Chet Baker is remembered today mainly for his angelic face and his ethereal singing voice. His life, as Gavin makes clear in this compelling but painful biography, was utterly unlike his music. Vaulted into sudden fame by his work with Gerry Mulligan in the early 1950s, the photogenic Baker found himself the heartthrob of female jazz fans and the winner of numerous polls for favorite trumpet player. This early adulation as the Great White Hope of jazz earned Baker the enmity of dues-paying black musicians and helped launch him on the self-destructive lifestyle that eventually ruined his looks and wasted his talent. A full-tilt heroin addict for more than 30 years, the once-angelic Baker soon became the antithesis of his romantic music. Gavin chronicles it all, following Baker on the endless search for his next score and describing the failed relationships and missed opportunities left in his wake. And yet, even near the end, his face ravaged and his body covered with abscesses, Baker could still, on occasion, play and sing beautifully. A difficult book to read but an eye-opening reminder of the chasm that sometimes separates life and art. Bill Ott

Where's the music?
By Melissa L. Roberson
While this book will certainly make compelling reading for any Chet Baker fan, or any follower of the 1950s-60s jazz scene, be prepared for a frigid treatment of the subject. Mr. Gavin may have a knack for writing about jazz musicians, but he neither understands nor appreciates the music itself one whit. There was a definite gap in the Chet Baker bio market, and Gavin has filled it. Unfortunately, he has not only taken the same angle that the tabloids always did, covering the drugs-and-domestic-violence aspect of Chet Baker, but he has gone them one better--to suit his theme he paints Baker not as a hip musician, which he was, but as a bumbling Okie square, who could never keep up with the music's 'advances'. Baker's conservative opinions of free jazz and fusion, to name just one example, are held up to ridicule. He is dismissed as being 'incapable' of such 'catharsis', as if his opinion were formed out of jealousy or open-mouthed incomprehension. In fact, Miles Davis, who is repeatedly held up as an example of what a great musician is made of so Baker can pale in comparison, despised free jazz. For that matter, many very hip black jazz musicians hated free jazz, and fusion as well. Louis Armstrong thought bebop itself was a joke. All the usual jazz cliches are resurrected here: white jazz is intellectual and precise but lacks feeling, while black jazz is earthy, charged with life and dripping with soul, etc. Except for frequent put-downs of Baker's music for its alleged "lack of feeling" (what, if not feeling, is Baker's music known for?) Gavin barely mentions any of Baker's recorded legacy, aside from occasional session details which always involved Chet's forgetting the date because he was stoned, and his subsequent lack of blowing power when finally coaxed into the studio. His quiet, intimate music is repeatedly dismissed as 'cold' or 'dead', either because Gavin apparently cannot understand feeling unless it is loud, sweaty and intense, or because any other analysis would complicate his single-minded theme. History features no shortage of creeps, louses or idiot savants who packed their music with feeling--Mozart anyone? Charlie Parker? Miles? Then what's all the fuss about? Why do we listen to this man's music 30, 40 and 50 years after it's been recorded? Why aren't we listening to Abbey Lincoln's or Albert Ayler's or any of the other cathartic free jazz or fusion that Gavin holds up as supreme examples of hip? If you didn't know before reading the book, you won't know after.

one of the saddest stories ever told
By Stuart Hoffman
It's difficult to recreate the arrival of Chet Baker to the world of jazz. At that time, around 1950, the trumpet masters were Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespe, Fats Navarro, and the Stan Kenton trumpet section, with Maynard Fergueson, and Buddy Childers. These "monsters" played above high C. F's, G's, and yes even DOUBLE high C's were their daily vocabulary. Along comes a kid from Oklahoma, whose family settles near LA, who never practices, has no high register(if he ever played a high C, I've never heard it) and decides to confront these guys, and the public with his idea of jazz, and jazz singing. He is an immediate sensation. His chamber music approach to jazz trumpet playing affects many people as does his singing. There are those who rate him a spinoff of Miles Davis, and that his singing isn't singing at all. I rate him a true master in both categories. The only fly in the ointment was his discovery and love of heroin. It superceded everything in his life---loved ones(some say he only loved heroin) children, musical associates etc. James Gavin does a masterful job recreating a life if possible, more tragic than Art Pepper's, or Charley Parker's. It's not for the faint of heart. If you worship every note and vocal of this master as I do, it's a must.

Pulitzer Prize finalist delivers.
By Christopher Hendrix
What a fantastic play this is.

Amy Herzog is completely new to me. I had just recently heard of her, and I only stumbled upon her work after the Pulitzer Prize announcements, of which this play was a finalist for in the Drama category (obviously). So I decided to chance it with a new playwright and buy the script. I couldn't be more impressed.

Basic plot-line: Leo arrives unannounced at his grandmother Vera's house after completing a cross-country bike trip, where he suffered a devastating loss. Over the course of a month, the two bicker, laugh, scream, and ultimately form a loving bond.

Herzog does an amazing job of keeping her characters real. That may not sound like much, but when you're talking about good, human drama, true-to-life is essential. Characters are both well-developed and growing throughout the course of the play.

There's such an interesting dynamic being played out between Leo and Vera. Herzog tempts her audience (or me at least) to ask, 'What exactly is our obligation to family? Does blood really run thicker than water?' Only a playwright who understands people can incite such questioning.

And in case you're not convinced to buy yet, I'll just hint that there is an absolutely fantastic male monologue near the end of the play, better than any crummy audition monologue one might find browsing the Internet or old solo books. So there's that.

Fantastic script. I can't wait to see what Herzog has in store.

Heartwarming play, easy to produce.
By Sherry Landrum
This is a wonderful heart-warming play about a relationship across two generations. Leo (21) drops in his grandmother Vera (91) in her New York apartment after a bike trip across country. Together they sort through their relationship and each other's live. 4000 Miles treats their remembered life events with humor and compassion. I wouldn't expect any less from Amy Herzog. I ordered this play because of it's casting; three women and one man. I am the director of a Professional Actor Training Program and at the end of two years each of our students performs in a play in a role in which they might be cast as professionals. This one has everything. One young man, two young women, one older woman and one set, and most important, an excellent text.

a young man and his grandma
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
Amy Herzog's play was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

21 year old Leo shows up at his 91 year old grandmother's apartment in NYC at 3 am. She is worried about his mental state and asks if he is high. He isn't and is a bit irritated by the question. He has just completed a cross country bike trip from Seattle, Washington that started months ago. When he started, his friend Micah was with him, but now he is not. We know something bad has happened, but we have joined the play in medias res.

There are two supporting characters who make brief appearances, but this is really a story about Leo and Vera, who are separated by 70 years and two generations. The dialogue is good, there are some funny moments and a few touching ones.
